Our broadest vision is of a world that lives in peace and harmony; a world community based on interdependence and respect for all life and all people. Our vision for our school is a Montessori school community of supportive parents, dedicated teachers and staff, and joyful learners. This was how Maria Montessori described her vision, and it’s a vision we share. At Dylan Kennedy Montessori School, we help children understand the world, but not just because the world is infinitely interesting and learning is fun. We help them understand it so they’ll know how to make it a better place. We emphasize reading, math, and science because they open doors into the world. We emphasize independence, self-direction, and choice because they help young people identify which doors they want to walk through. We emphasize collaboration, cooperation and peace because, ultimately, we know that neither we nor our children walk alone.
MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission is to create a stimulating Montessori environment which cultivates the whole child and allows for the self-creating process of him or her.
Dylan Kennedy Montessori School is dedicated to providing the highest quality Montessori education in East Shelby County, with our Montessori Certified teachers. Our objective at DKM is to create an atmosphere that promotes a love of learning and to educate children to be caring, socially responsible citizens of their community and the world. We offer progressive educational programs from 18 months through 5 years old as well as an After School Program up through 7th grade.
Dylan Kennedy Montessori School seeks to educate the whole child, applying the Montessori philosophy, in a family-oriented environment. The philosophy is based on the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) whose holistic vision of education focuses on the cognitive, social, emotional and physical needs of the child. For Dr. Montessori, and for DKM, education is preparation for life.
Finally, we believe that a strong involvement of the parents in the child's education is crucial to her academic and social development. We believe strongly that both formal conferences and informal daily interaction between parents and teachers is vital to this involvement. We encourage the parents and the teachers to discuss any problems or successes the student has at school or at home. In this way we can work as a team to help the student achieve his potential.
